There’s been much anticipation in seeing Will Smith’s version of the big, blue genie in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Aladdin. In a newly released TV spot, we finally get our first glimpse of him, complete with all of his blue CGI smoke and make-up.
He looks, well, like Will Smith, but blue.
Though he’s only given, like, ten seconds of time in the TV spot, we do get a good sense of the type of genie Will Smith will be playing. Unlike Robin Williams, who was big and expressive, Smith’s Genie appears to be a bit more grounded?
Many have already doubted Smith’s ability to ever top Robin Williams, and even the actor has said replicating the late Williams’ approach to the character would be near impossible. Instead, he’s bringing his own unique flavor to the role and it looks like he’ll be a much more suave and cool Genie.
A thrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic, “Aladdin” is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future. Directed by Guy Ritchie, who brings his singular flair for fast-paced, visceral action to the fictitious port city of Agrabah, “Aladdin” is written by John August and Ritchie based on Disney’s “Aladdin.”
Disney’s Aladdin hits theaters on May 24, 2019.
